Interesting article. I wonder if the Gerardo Mazzella mentioned in it is related to the Daniela Mazzella who started this particular topic. I would imagine so. Daniela, if you're reading this, what is Ponza like in the shoulder season, say the months of May/June and October?

After the Rick Steves' tribes discover the place and descend on the Ponziane Islands, it will be the end of the beautiful islands the way we know them. They will become another Disneyworld zoo just like the Cinque Terre. Rick Steves may do more damage than a huge tsunami.

Roberto, I have thought that thought as well, but I wonder how the families who run the little hotels, B&Bs, and shops feel about it. They have been enriched over the years by the tourist €€€, and the whole area has benefited economically. Rick does encourage travelers to show respect for the people and for the area's natural beauty. It's a razor's edge, I suppose.

Roberto, I think you're the main person on this Rick Steves board who is suggesting Ponza. If it ends up on his radar, won't you have to take some of the responsibility?

Yes, Michael. I guess I have to take some responsibility. I was the earthquake triggering the tsunami. Although the New York Times may have to take some responsibility as well: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/08/travel/08overnighter-ponza.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 Soon Italians will be left with Lampedusa only to find some peace. But that is already being invaded by North African refugees, so I guess there is no escape. The island of Montecristo is a natural sanctuary prohibited to visitors, so I guess the only chance is to sneak in that place.

Randel, Daniela gives her email address. Or PM her. Have you tried that?
