An Australian man has been arrested in Bali after police allegedly caught him in possession of methamphetamine.

Perth man Aaron Wayne Coyle, 44, who has been on the holiday island since the start of the year, was arrested on Tuesday night along with a British man, Collum Park, 32.

Bali police allege Mr Cole was found with 1.2g of methamphetamine on him and Mr Park was found with 11.8g of methamphetamine and 15 ecstasy pills.

Both men are being held by police in Denpasar and face a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail and a fine if found guilty of drugs charges, the Canberra Times reported.

Police allege the pair were working as part of a drug syndicate targeting foreigners on the holiday island, 7 News reports.

“We suspect that the Briton is the drug dealer and distributor, while the Australian is the courier,” Denpasar police chief Jansen Panjaitan said in a statement on Thursday.

“They are working on storing and distributing it by planting the drugs somewhere. We allege they are part of a syndicate.”

The police chief alleged that Mr Coyle, whose tourist visa in Bali has been extended due to a COVID-19 emergency stay permit, was on his way to deliver drugs in Seminyak was he was arrested.

Police allege Mr Coyle was paid $20 to act as a courier after collecting the drugs from the British man, Mr Park.

Indonesia is notorious for its strict anti-drug laws, which rank among some of the toughest in the world.

Several Australians have fallen foul of the laws in Bali, including Schapelle Corby, who was sentenced to 20 years in jail in 2005 for importing cannabis, and the Bali Nine, whose ringleaders, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were executed by firing squad in 2015.
